AI-Powered Reading Tools

Course overview image

Reading is one of the most essential skills for learning, but for many students with dyslexia it can feel frustrating and tiring. Words may blur, letters seem to move around, and long passages can feel like a wall of text. Instead of focusing on meaning, students often end up spending all their energy just trying to decode the words. This is where AI-powered reading tools can make a real difference. By combining smart technology with accessibility, they turn reading into something easier, clearer, and much more enjoyable. In this course, we’ll explore how artificial intelligence can support reading in everyday learning. One of the most powerful tools is text-to-speech. With just a click, written passages are transformed into natural, clear voices. Students can listen as they follow along with the text, which strengthens both comprehension and memory. Another tool, speech-to-text, flips the process around—allowing students to speak their ideas out loud and have them written down automatically. This reduces the stress of spelling and handwriting, making it easier to share thoughts and complete assignments. AI can also simplify complex sentences into shorter, easier ones without changing the meaning. This feature, known as text simplification, helps learners engage with the same content as their peers at a level that feels comfortable. On top of that, many AI tools provide real-time highlighting, dyslexia-friendly fonts, and customizable colors and backgrounds that reduce visual strain. The goal of this module is not just to introduce these tools but to help learners find the right mix that works for them. Every student with dyslexia is unique, and AI allows them to adjust settings—like reading speed, voice style, or layout—until reading feels natural. By the end of this course, students will feel confident using AI tools for schoolwork, personal study, or even reading just for fun. With the right support, reading can shift from being a struggle into a skill that empowers and inspires.
